The attached mini-research paper was a collaborative paper examining the possibility of utilizing a tablet PC for Arabic language acquisition. Major limitations of this project included too few individuals testing and too short of testing duration. However, a more longitudinal study coupled with not only more qualitative measurements but also quantitative measurements, such as a t-test, might yield some interesting results.
Our research project examined how a hybrid English/Arabic keyboard and a tablet PC's handwriting input method might help facilitate the learning of writing in Arabic as a second language. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, we taught a mini-Arabic lesson of how to write five letters and five words to two students utilizing the aforementioned technologies. We conducted a two-hour lesson in which we asked predetermined interview questions and recorded the responses and took observational notes as the students progressed through the tasks. The results seem to indicate a favorable response to utilizing the tablet PC over the English/Arabic keyboard due to its cognitive challenge of having to actually write the letters and words.
